This would have been my sixth year spending Thanksgiving away from home.
I hadn’t been home for the holiday since I was in high school.
So this year I decided it was about time to change that.

When I bought my ticket back in August I decided that this was the perfect time to try to surprise my family. It was something that I had always wanted to do, but this was the first time that the opportunity had presented itself.

I enlisted the help of my sister’s boyfriend Justin and decided that I would try to surprise everyone in my family. Now people, you have to understand, keeping a secret like this for three months was a BIG DEAL. There were so many times that I either almost slipped or gave in a told them.
So here is how it all went down.

Justin picked me up from the airport and we went straight to my family’s flower shop. I had written up this poem (pictured below) in Christmas cards to be handed to my family right before I walked in.
My grandparents were in the shop and my mom was across the street getting lunch with a family friend that had stopped by. Justin delivered both of the cards and then came back to get me from where I was hiding in the back hallway.
My grandparents were a bit confused by the card, so when I walked around the corner I more startled them, then surprising.
Since my Mom was across the street, she was more confused that Justin had came in, handed her a card and then ran out again. It took her a bit to put together my handwriting and the cards message but as I headed over there she came running out too.
My sister screamed publicly. It was pretty funny.
My favorite reaction was my Dad’s though. He walked into the store an hour later, looked at me like I had three heads and said “What the hell are you doing here?” I love you too Dad.
Josh (my uncle) was out of town so I just tagged him in my Facebook status. His reaction there was about the same as it would have been in person.
Everyone in my family was genuinely surprised and I am super excited to be spending this entire week with them.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Welcome {HOME}! And I love the description of your family’s reactions – I can totally picture it. 🙂
